Webinar 7: Skin irritation testing using non-animal methods, and EPA’s new decision framework for dermal hazard assessment of chemicals

March 17, 2026
11:00 am ET / 15:00 UTC

Presenters:
Rachel Bunner, PhD, US Environmental Protection Agency, Office of Pollution Prevention and Toxics

Hans Raabe, Institute for In Vitro Sciences

The US EPA's New Chemicals Division has collaborated with colleagues at PETA Science Consortium International and the Institute for In Vitro Sciences to develop an approach that prioritizes and encourages the submission of human-relevant, reproducible NAMs data for the evaluation of skin irritation/corrosion for new chemicals. The framework is described in this document: https://www.epa.gov/system/files/documents/2026-01/508-skin-irritation-decision-framework_final.pdf

This webinar will discuss and describe the framework and the methods within, such as human three-dimensional tissue-based assays. Recent work to characterize in vivo, in vitro, and in chemico assays for skin irritation and corrosion, including advantages and limitations, will be shared.
